The city area of Buzet is located in the northernmost inner part of Istria, in the area between three major city centers: Rijeka, Trieste and Pula. It borders the Republic of Slovenia (City Municipality of Koper), the municipalities of Motovun, Oprtalj, Lanišće, Lupoglav and Cerovlje and the City of Pazin. The total area of the city is 165 km² .
The area of Buzet is very diverse, with altitudes ranging from 10 to over 1000 m, and therefore the climate diversity is great, from the Mediterranean climate in the valley of the river Mirna to the continental climate in the mountainous part of Ćićarija. The old town of Buzet is located on a 150 m high hill above the valley of the river Mirna, while the new part of town, the so-called Fountain, developing at the foot of the hill.
